Fast Autobahns

The autobahn scratch is a scratch DJ Rafik came up with and became well know with the release of Qbert’s Skratchlopedia Breaktanica DVD. On the video he demonstrates the scratch both fast and slow, after many people debating the subject a video was then released on the internet of Rafik showing that they were actually to slightly different variations. Since I showed how the slow autobahn is done in the One Record Movement, Many Possibilities article I just going to add this quick post to show faster one too.

What’s the difference?

There are 2 main differences between the slow style autobahn and the faster one. The first is the timing, the slow has 8 sounds in complete circuit and therefore has a sort of 4/4 rhythm to it, the faster one has a triplet rhythm to it and in Rafik’s example has 9 sounds in a circuit.

The second difference is that where as the slow one repeats it’s self in the same portion of the record the second one kind of creeps forwards through the sample. In Rafik’s example he creeps forwards for 2 repetition then come back on the third giving 9 sounds, but in reality you can go forwards give different number of sounds per cycle (all multiples of 3 which give the triplet feel).

The Scratch

Ok, so this is what the scratch the Rafik demonstrated:

And here are some with different numbers of forward parts:

And this is how it sounds:

Learning The Scratch

To learn this scratch I recommend you start with the version with just 1 forward part, then add more when you have that scratch down.

I think the hardest part is the fact that the start of each cycle of triplets starts with the second part of a flare which is a bit weird as the record just keeps moving and the “beat” is created using a click. When I first tried learning it I did it really slowly and stopped the record movement after each third sound creating a tear so it went “1 2 3 stop 1 2 3 stop” which helped until I got used to the pattern.

Slow Autobahn

Just incase you want to see it again here is the slow version autobahn scratch:
